Huntington Beach is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 393,865 at the 2010 census. The City of Huntington Beach was incorporated on April 12, 1959. It is located on the Huntington beach peninsula between Huntington and Laguna Beach. The first people to live in what is now Huntington Beach were the Tongva tribe who arrived in 1821. A smallpox epidemic that year killed many of these early settlers. In 1842, brothers George and Lorenzo Ventura founded a small fishing village called La Jolla on Point Conception (now downtown). The town became an agricultural center with landowning families growing oranges and other crops. The first post office opened in 1846 and continued operating until it was closed by the US Postal Service in 1865 because of lack of business. In 1907, real estate developer Harry Chandler decided to develop land north of Point Conception into what would become Huntington Beach. He named his development “Beachwood” after his home country of Spain where he had been born two years earlier. By 1909, only one house remained unoccupied at the original beachwood site; Chandler donated it to the city for use as its first library (later renamed Raymond Library). On July 14, 1959, Mayor John Ahern dedicated the new City Hall which housed both the police department and city services including sewerage and water systems when they were finally completed two years later during a time when such amenities were still rare or nonexistent within most American cities at that point! Ahern also initiated plans for streetcars running through Downtown from Pasadena down Anaheim Blvd., making it possible for people living east of I-405 to get around without having to drive all the way up Interstate 5 or out onto Harbor Boulevard - opening up new shopping opportunities for northeast Orange County residents! Excitement about this unprecedented public transportation initiative quickly turned into enthusiasm as more streetcar lines were added throughout Southern California over ensuing decades! Today there are six streetcar lines serving Downtown: 4 along Harbor Boulevard from San Pedro Mesa southward; 1 along Newport Avenue from State Route 163 westward; 2 along Mission Bay Drive from San Anselmo southward; 3 east–westalong Pacific Coast Highway from Westminster northward; and 1 extending east off Point Loma Boulevard across Seal Rock Canyon to serviced Irvine Ranch!
