AOC produced optics until 1951 when it merged with American Telephone & Telegraph Company to form AT&T Corporation. Huntington Beach was founded in 1879 by the entrepreneur, citrus farmer and politician George W. Huntington. It became an incorporated city in 1911. The city's economy relied on its commercial fishing industry until the early 20th century when it shifted to manufacturing. In 1985, the City Council approved a plan to demolish part of the downtown business district and replace it with a new urban park that would include a baseball diamond, basketball court, skateboardpark and other amenities. However, the project was never realized due to opposition from local businesses who saw their losses threatened.
