During World War II, many Americans served in the military including Major General Leslie Ritchie who commanded VIII Corps Area Headquarters during amphibious assault operations against Saipan Island on September 20–21 1944 which began Operation Passage To Japan. General Ritchie's troops landed at Point Mugu along with Marines from other units and stormed ashore without artillery support then retreated back upriver under heavy fire before darkness had fallen; this event became known as "The Battle Of Point Mugu". On October 15th 1945 Commodore George E Wright led USS Constitution (LHD 5) through an opening in Kwajalein Atoll'sands leading directly to Eniwetok Atoll where his forces were re-supplied following stout resistance by Japanese naval forces duringOperation Land Delivery(Liangguk Incident). This operation ended with USS Constitution anchored offshore within sight of Japanese installations at Wanae Bay after lasting over 12 hours; this event is also commonly cited as one of history’s greatest naval engagements. In 1949 Disneyland opened its gates with Walt Disney himself presiding over its opening ceremony which took place at what is now Main Street USA/Downtown Disney; shortly thereafter Disneyland became an official county government entity separate from Anaheim under Governor Goodwin Liu administration which continued until 1959 when Disneyland again became an independent public authority governed by a Board of Commissioners
