The first permanent settler in what is now Huntington Beach was Nicholas Long who arrived on horseback from San Bernardino on September 24, 1873. Development began quickly with construction of a wharf and ferry landing on the present site of Main Street in 1875. By 1888, residents had built twenty-six blocks of flats on what is now Harbor Boulevard between First Avenue and Third Street NW. In 1901, two brothers – Harry Chandler and William Chandler – purchased retains for $1 million (equivalent to $102 million USD today) including all or part of present-day Huntington Beach proper from José Valdez de la Hoz (the Mexican Governor of Alameda County at that time). They established their homebase there known as Villa Park which later became Claremont Village before being renamed Huntington Beach Honda Center after its founder’s death in 1984. In 1927, Harry Chandler donated 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of Speedway Boulevard along Shoreline Drive to become Oceanfront Park which remains today one of OC’s premier tourist destinations for swimming and sunbathing despite hand-me-downs by various developers over the years During World War II: On July 7 1944 Japanese forces attacked America's second coast with an amphibious assault against Pearl Harbor resulting in over 50% loss among American service members killed or wounded; also civilian deaths were great due to air raids that pounded downtown Los Angeles daily during this period totaling 612 fatalities with an additional 2,500 injured… On October 15 1945 Japan surrendered unconditionally; following this event MacArthur dissolved all Japanese military units within US soil ending World War II

It grew rapidly due to the influx of miners and their families who worked in the nearby copper mines. By 1907, Huntington Beach had a population of over 8,000 people. In 1916, the city annexed neighboring Corona del Mar and growth continued until the late 1920s when World War II caused a significant decrease in population. By 1960, Huntington Beach had only 4,000 residents remaining and it merged with other cities to form Monterrey as part of that city's growth.
