As firearms became more sophisticated, ammunition became more important than ever before because they could be used to kill large numbers of people quickly and easily. Huntington Beach was founded on December 12, 1876 by John S. Huntington and his wife Nellie B. Huntington. The town became a city in 1959 and is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California. The area that would become Huntington Beach was first inhabited by the Tongva people, who ranched land around Point Loma on the Pacific Coast. On July 14, 1853, Commodore James K. Polk arrived at Point Loma and discovered this area to be rich in oil resources. In 1854, George Hearst purchased some of these resources from the Tongva people and built his new ranch called Rancho Santa Anita on what is now known as Harbor Boulevard near Point Loma. After years of debate between those who wanted to develop this land and those who did not, it was decided that Rancho Santa Anita would be developed as a resort town with mansions for wealthy individuals. The first structure built in what is now Huntington Beach was called the First House on Harbor Boulevard which was erected by Mr. Earle Davenport for himself and his family in 1875." On October 30th, 1860 two men named Charles Durant and John Cushing were driving along Harbor Boulevard when they saw an amazing sight; a small boat filled with passengers suddenly sunk without warning off shore! They soon realized that their boat had been sabotaged so they set out to find out why! Eventually they located the culprits- two Native American women who were using their canoe to take water measurements! This adventure led them onto an important path in Hawaiian history; after coming ashore they met Captain Cook (the captain of HMS Endeavour) who invited them aboard his ship for dinner! From then on their lives changed forever!" The early settlers here didn't have much choice but to start building where they stood because there wasn't much else available at the time! By 1880 there were over 100 businesses operating here including banks, hotels, grocery stores, auto mechanics etcetera." Eventually a group of businessmen formed the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce which helped build up business within our community" In 1916 developer Harry Chandler bought part of Rancho Santa Anita from George Hearst which gave him control over almost all aspects of life within our community" In 1928 Harry Chandler donated 5000 acres (2 km²) alongshore to our cityhood cause he felt that we could use it more efficiently than he could" In 1951 Mayor Ralph Bunche announced plans for downtown redevelopment including construction of a library/cultural center/mall etcetera"" Today we see many variants such as high-end condos being built next door while prices continue to go up every year," said Manager Christy Youngblood about how things havechanged since she got her job 2 years ago
