The first European settlers in what is now Huntington Beach arrived in 1847 by ship from San Francisco. They were led by Captain John Brougham and his party of 38 men under the command of Captain Arthur Atherton. The mission Santa Ana del Oro was founded on July 6, 1847 by Father José Gomez to serve as a mission town for Spanish colonists near present-day Disneyland and Hollywood Boulevard. However, due to its distance from Mexican land grants and lack of water resources, Santa Ana del Oro failed to thrive and closed down on August 30th, 1849. In 1853, George Seaton filed an application for Rancho San Pedro de la Costa which became known as Rancho Guerrero Californiano (later renamed Rancho Pacifica). In 1857 George Seaton sold part of rancho Guerrero Californiano to James Fenton who subdivided it into 24 sections that would become Huntington Beach. The community name "Huntington" originated with Drury Halsey who gave it to his friend Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt when they met at the Tustin Yacht Club in 1863 during their search for a new base of operations for Commodore Vanderbilt's Armada squadron sailing around Catalina Island during 1863–64 season aboard HMS Guerriero off Laguna Seca Harbor when they met Commodore Vandyke on board USS Constitution while cruising through Newport Harbor between January 12th - February 3rd inclusive.) The first recorded use of this name was published November 17th 1860 volume 2 page 523 beneath heading 'From Halsey'.
