The main street in Huntington Beach is "Highways 101" which runs parallel to Seal Beach Boulevard outside of downtown business district while another major road heading inland from downtown is called "Pacific Coast Highway". There are also several other minor roads side by side with I-5 just north of downtown that give access to various parts of Huntington beach like beaches and coves. Huntington beach was originally known as Pier Head because it stood on an old landing stage smack dab in between Newport Harbor (to the east) and Seal Beach (to the west). On July 4th 1907, J.P Morgan & Co., James Irvine & Willard Cox landed their boatload of rich beach goers at what is now known as Pier Head after disembarking from their steamer Empress Ballroom which had come ashore from San Francisco Bay on June 2nd following an eight day journey outfitted by Captain John Fiske aboard HMS Pandora
Huntington Beach was founded on December 12, 1876 by George C. Huntington and his wife Anna Maria. The original town site was located on the east bank of the Black River. The first post office was opened in 1877. By 1886, Huntington Beach had a population of about 200 people. In 1906, the city became fully incorporated and changed its name to Huntington Beach, California.
