In 1836, Ensign George Atherton explored this area looking for a route across America on his way to become commander-in-chief of United States Marines during Mexico's War of Independence (1846-48). He discovered water rights in what became present day Kern County while mapping out these waters for future irrigation projects; he then sold off these lands to various farmers including Jerald Copley who platted what would become known as "Hollister" on November 15, 1849 according to oral tradition about one local resident at that time: "about 400 acres [120 hectares] square with a stream running through it." This plat included all or part of present day Bishop City as well as parts of today's Lynx Heights neighborhood south east of Interstate 5 (I-5 freeway), comprising tracts now bounded by State Route 128/Highway 172/US 101 southeast of downtown Bishop City, State Route 190 southwest thereof just past US 99 within city limits bordering Lynx Heights & Cottonwood Hills neighborhoods northward along I-5 until reaching portions extending into Imperial Valley countryside beyond I-5 northeast boundary line tan border line with Porterville
