Hollister is home to three schools: Roosevelt High School (grades 9-12), North Park Intermediate School (grades 7-8), and Central Valley Junior College (ages 18-24). John Hollister was born in 1846 in what is now part of Stockbridge Township, Ontario County, New York. He emigrated with his family to Oregon Territory in 1848 and worked as a farmhand before settling in western California in 1857. That year he married Catherine Chapman who also came from Ontario County, New York. They homesteaded land near present-day Fresno and began trading goods they acquired along their journey for goods sold by Native Americans across the Great Basin region. In 1865 they had four children: John P., Anna M., Julius A., and Helen L.. In 1870 John P.. died suddenly from pneumonia while fishing on Tomales Bayou; his widow continued farming alone until her death 3 years later at age 49 due to natural causes related to childbirth complications following their first child’s birth six months premature.) In 1875 Catherine married James Witherspoon who also arrived from northwestern Ontario County; they farmed together until 1888 when James Witherspoon died suddenly after trawling for salmon on Trinity Creek near Needles Lake.). In 1889 Mrs. Witherspoon married John Fenton who had come overland from Canada that year as part of wagon train bound for Sacramento via Tucson Crossing; he became her fifth husband(). That year Mrs Fenton moved her family into their own house which she built on land leased from William Hammond Jr., one of several farmers who bought sections around present day Fresno during that period.(Fenton farm began production Nov 1785.) When Lady Bird Johnson visited Jan 1914 she observed many petteas fenced off inside home w/ gates preventing access) .) By 1930 most Partons were dead except 4 adults living under roof (& 2 minors)
