Hollister, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hollister is surrounded by Tulare County to the north and east and Kern County to the south. The Hollister area dates back to 1879 when prospectors discovered gold ore on hills near present-day Hollister. The first stop on what would become a long railroad journey from Sacramento was made here in 1881. The townsite was named after John C. Hollis, an investors who bought land in this area in 1879. By 1902, business had started up around a sawmill and grist mill that were located on current-day U Street in downtown Hollister. The town’s history can be traced back to its incorporation as a city under state law on November 17, 1912 (see History of Hollister). At that time it consisted of just over 100 residents including 20 men employed by JAPCO who ran the local power plant and water supply system. JAPCO went out of business during World War I and all employees were laid off; however, many continue to live in or visit Hollister today thanks to its close proximity to Fresno and other major cities with jobs opportunities outside of agriculture or shopping malls. After World War II, much development took place around what are now Interstate 5 (I-5) and First Hill Road (First Hill Avenue), especially along I-5 which connected Los Angeles with Phoenix through the Central Valley; much of this new development occurred outside of Hullster limits until they were annexed by Fresno in 1978 In recent years there has been some growth developing within the boundaries but most notably along First Hill Road which lies across I-5 from Downtown Fresno
