In 1964, Johnson Air Force Base opened up in nearby Westover Heights and necessitated an increased number of civilians living near the Army base; this led to an increase in housing prices around town, which caused many people to leave for richer areas. In response, Mayor Donny Meier proposed that Hollister become an independent city once again within five years; however, no action was taken until 2000 when he reintroduced the idea after seeing plans for development near his house that would have destroyed much of what had been preserved around town. At first it received mixed reactions from residents but eventually support grew after Meier made several changes including creating more affordable housing and increasing public access to essential services such as policing and firefighting as well as improving infrastructure such as roads and water systems. Today Hollister has achieved significant growth with new businesses arriving every day along with increased attention from both local and federal governments due to its location close to major hubs like Johnson Air Force Base and Bakersfield University
