Hollister is located in the Central Valley and is bordered by Fresno to the east, Bakersfield to the south, Kern County to the west and north, and Stockton to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hollister were Spanish explorers on their way from Monterey Bay in 1542. They named it "San Francisco de las Palmas" because they thought it might be an island. A mission was established there in 1777 by Father José Antonio Carreño y Tejeda. In 1848, Hollister became part of Mexico when Ygnacio Obregón became president of Mexico after winning the Mexican-American War. In 1851, General Tomás García Madero attacked Nuevo Laredo while army units under his command were marching through Hollister on their way northward into California. The town's arsenal was captured along with many other towns and villages as part of this attack against Aguascalientes Province; however most of these people were never released or allowed back into Mexico proper due to fears that they would defect to American control should war break out between America and Mexico over this issue. In 1865 Hollister was platted as a community by John Sutter within boundaries laid down by him for Rancho Los Nietos grant #14458 given him by Governor Manuel Micheltorena during his Interim Government created following Ygnacio Obregón's coup d'etat on October 21st that year which overthrew Mexican President Agustín Benito Juárez The Kit Carson Expedition discovered gold near present day Hollister on November 5th 1858 while traveling down Trinity River Road from Stockton across northern San Joaquin County Nevada On January 14th 1860 a group of men led by Hiram Maxim including Edwin Leland Youngest set out from Fillmore City with horses drawn by mules looking for potential strikes nearpresent day Felicity Lake about 25 miles east of present day Hollister Independence Peak shown on map today is located approximately 10 miles southeast of Felicity Lake at an elevation above sea level
