Hollister is located on the Kern River, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Bakersfield and 40 miles (60 km) south of Stockton. The first settlers in what is now Hollister were farmers who moved from central California to this area in the early 1800s. In 1849, John C. Fratkin founded the first post office here. The name "Hollister" was given to the town by pioneer Daniel Boone Hollis because there was not yet a place called Hickory Hill or Horseshoe Bend on the Kern River where he lived. Hollister is part of the Salinas-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hollister were Mexican traders who prospected for gold in 1846. In 1848, Hollister was founded by Captain Fenton and his party of men on Rancho San Luis Rey de Bodega which covered . On July 17, 1850, Captain Fenton sold Rancho San Luis Rey de Bodega to John Sutter and his brother Peter for $5,000 (). By 1907 only 684 people lived in town and 468 residents lived in adjoining rural communities; however, this figure had declined to 377 by 1910 due to migration fromtown to larger cities such as Fresno or Sacramento during World War I (1918-1921). During World War II (1939-1945), many businesses closed down throughout southern Kern County because of the hard times brought about by the war; however despite this economic hardship much progress had been made since then; for example starting up new businesses such as construction materials dealerships (), truck farmershops () and food stores (). Today much of downtown HollISTER bustles with activity day and night during business season while most rural areas have seen some degree of decline over recent decades (−10% since 2000).
