Hollister, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Hollister is located on the right bank of the Arroyo Seco River and its boundaries are defined by Interstate 5 to the north and east, Hollister Road to the west and south, and Angeles National Forest to the southwest. The history of Hollister goes back more than 100 years. In 1892, a post office called "Hollister" was established in what is now downtown Hollister. The name may be derived from John C. Hollis who built a sawmill there in 1853-54. In 1899, two other towns were founded within San Bernardino County - Pomona to the east and Glendale to the west of Hollister - which became known as "The 3 Towns". In 1907, an act was passed by Congress that designated part of San Bernardino County as Arroyo Seco Valley Open Space Preserve; this included much of what is now HollISTER today. On February 15th 1912, when Arroyo Seco Dam opened ferries could travel between Clear Lake (to the south) and Millbrae (to the north), opening up many new opportunities for industry in what would become known as "the City onthe Creek". In 1957 approximately 60% of all product sales were generated within town limits only; today less than 10% of all product sales are generated within town limits only due to distance from production sites or distribution networks

Hollister, California was founded on September 2, 1853 by John Hollister and his wife Catharine E. Merrill. The town was named for Hollister's farm in Monterey County. The Hollisters were the first white people to reside in the area that would become Hollister. John Hollister developed a flour mill in nearby Salinas and exported flour to San Francisco Bay Area businesses until his death in 1865. In 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad built a line from Stockton to Hollister, providing transportation for goods from San Joaquin Valley farmers to market in downtown San Francisco. The railroad also brought settlers into the area and began construction of homes and businesses around what is now called Main Street. In 1887–1888, local horticulturist Jens Jensen designed and built what is now known as the Pioneer Cabin Preserve near Main Street and US 101A. It was one of many early public works projects undertaken by Jensen in the townsite during his time as town planner. By 1902, all but 5 of the original 20 houses had been constructed, making Hollister one of the most rapidly growing communities in California at that time. On May 15, 1948 a massive fire destroyed much of downtown Hollister because of faulty wiring inside an oil refinery complex just east of town on State Route 34 (now I-580). A $2 million reconstruction project followed which included demolition of most old buildings within two years with replacement done largely through donations from citizens and business owners across Southern California who saw their neighborhoods lose something like 50% or more of their value due to the fire damage alone; this event helped define Hollister as an " arson capital" while still being seen as part of its small-town charm today In 1962 an expressway bypassed town center entirely cutting off access to Main Street which has gradually regained some traffic usage over recent years despite overall decline since then elsewhere in surrounding counties

The population increased rapidly during the early 20th century due to farming and water rights developments in the area; however, World War II led to a decline in population as people left for military service or other opportunities overseas. The town experienced a resurgence during the 1990s through growth of retail development and new businesses such as medical offices and restaurants; however, that growth has slowed since 2000 due to challenging economic conditions throughout Southern California. In recent years, Hollister has made small-scale investments into its infrastructure including updated roads and sidewalks, public works projects such as resurfacing streetscape areas, and more affordable housing developments with access to local schools.
