It is part of the Antelope Valley–Rancho Mirage Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hollister is known for its location on Hollister Road and as a center for art, culture, and shopping. The first people to live in what is now Hollister were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around springs near present-day Hollister. On July 14, 1853, George Custer landed his troops at Alta Loma ondefine Rancho San Luis Rey de Baja (now part of downtown Riverside) in what is now Hollister after departing from Fort Sill on March 13th that year with his Buffalo Soldier column under General Custer's command during the American Civil War. The town was founded by William Hickey as "Alta Loma" in 1853 when he platted land east of present-day Route 66 which later became Park Boulevard and then Highway 235. In 1860, Jameson Dyer bought about of land south of present-day Route 66 from Juan Rodriguez y Santos for $800 and developed it into what is now known as Old Town Hollister. In 1865, John Wesley Edwards acquired an additional tract northwest of Old Town HollISTER which he called "New Town". When Black Hawk War began in 1867 he donated land to the United States government to serve as an ammunition depot during the hostilities. This area eventually became known as Grants Pass because much of it lay within Grants Pass National Forest properties that were acquired by President Ulysses S Grant following the war effort. In 1898 Drs Charles Wiltse and Edwin Starr developed a product they called Wiltse's Ice Cream while stationed at Fort Huachuca Barracks in Phoenixville Township outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; this produced their first commercial shipment from processing plants established at Huachuca Barracks with equipment provided by Philadelphia photographer Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney before Vandyke left for good in 1899). Upon their return to America they named their business Wiltse & Company after themselves but due to trademark considerations changed it back to Wiltse & Company soon afterwards due to confusion with other ice cream businesses already operating under various names throughout North America including companies such as International Harvester (founded 1870), Philadelphia Riots (1893), Coca Cola Refreshments Incorporated (1901),Philadelphia Phillies (1914), Delaware Dairy Products Co., Incorporated (1920) etc.). At that time rancho land was relatively scarce so farming was their primary focus; however they did establish several small businesses including saddlery, livery services and grocery stores along with providing support services such as Veterinary care/stock raising/farming etc.. They were also able to build up some acreage around their property into what would become today’s Hollister area; originally being confined within walking distance only of their home. In 1872 Hollister became an agricultural center with its own flour mill erected by Charles Fenton (1820-1904) who had come from nearby Sacramento looking for new farmland after his family’s bakery failed due to competition from larger cities such as Sacramento or San Francisco. PostwarBakerfield quickly overtook Hwy 49 as Central California’s leading grain export center thanks largely to increased production following World War I; however Packing House Flour continued operations intermittently until 1974 when it closed down due various technological advancements made available domestically that made milling flour much easier becoming instead a baking powder company known today ASIBCO Incorporation). After this closure many local people decided not bother getting back into milling because modern technology had surpassed older methods making production costs far cheaper than ever before making this type of business essentially extinct locally again temporarily halting any further momentum even though many old buildings still stand extantToday's largest employer(by payroll) inside City limits currently ISPATTECH Corporation whose activity ranges from architectural design services through engineering/planning services involved in developing new buildings -all without actually leaving City limits!
