Hollister, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 5,471 at the 2000 census. Hollister is located in Stanislaus County and is part of the Modesto metropolitan area. The name Hollister comes from the Spanish language word "hollo" meaning "auckleberry." It was first known as simply "Hollister" in 1868 when it was within Rancho Hondo de la Purísima Concepción Mexican land grant which was given to José Montoya Arcángel. In 1865, businessman John C. Calhoun bought some parcel of land east of Hollister from MontoyaArcángel for $1,000 and named it Hollister after John C. Calhoun's father-in-law who had died before that time. In 1868, Jno Bollenbrook added his own cattle ranch onranchos west of Hollister with a farmstead called New Holsteins near present day Folsom Street and Bidwell Road. He named his new place New Hope because he expected to find happiness there since he had been unsuccessful finding it on his previous trips to the area. A post office called Holly Springs opened in 1870, and remained open until 1909; during that time it served as the headquarters for two branches of the Pacific Coast Railroad: one at Twelfth and Center Streets (later Union Station), and another at Elmira Avenue (now Rodeo Drive) south of town limits where mail was delivered by horseback or wagon to larger towns such as Sacramento and Berkeley across an ox track on which goods were shipped into San Francisco then carried out again by rail down Market Street to be sold in City Hall Square below). In 1910, when railroad tracks crossed over the town's border into Kern County, many people decided to move to nearby Bakersfield because of its easier access to markets and education. Businesses gradually closed as rail service declined; however, some residents kept their businesses open until they were forced out by redevelopment efforts that began in the early 21st century. Today, Hollister remains a small but active community with a few stores and a handful of residences dating back to the mid-19th century
