Mormon pioneers built a log cabin on what is now Spring Mountain Road in 1853 and named it "Hollister." A post office called "Hollister" was established in 1854, but no town took form until 1860 when John Prentice founded Prenticeville to serve as a crossroads for settlers traveling westward from nearby Riverside. By 1865, there were twenty-six residents at Hollister; by 1870 there were seventy-one residents and by 1880 there were ninety-eight residents living in what became known as Hollister Township. In 1896–97 incorporation occurred which merged portions of Unincorporated areas including parts of East Orange (1896), West Covina (1897), North Covina (1898), Jurupa Valley (1900) and South Jurupa Valley (1901). On July 1, 1907 Hollister incorporated as a city with a population of 382 people under the name "Holliserville." A fire destroyed most of downtown on December 15th 1907 while Christmas shopping; only one building remained standing after being rebuilt using local materials within weeks without any public funds or assistance from the City government or developers involved with rebuilding Downtown Los Angeles during that time period which would have been unprecedented except perhaps for pre-war developments such as Hollywood Heights which also experienced reconstruction following fire damage during redecoration efforts prior to 1915 when redevelopment officially began taking place throughout DowntownLos Angeles under then termed “The Landmark District”
