Hollister, CA is a small village in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Hollister has a history dating back to 1849 when it was named Horsehoe Valley after the hills east of town. The first post office in Hollister opened on February 17, 1850. Today there are only a few remaining buildings from this early years including the original Hollister Courthouse and Schoolhouse which are now used as part of Hollister High School. The principal industry in Hollister during its early days was farming with many residents also working in the nearby towns of Bishop and Upland for their own income. However, by 1860 mining had become an important factor in the community's development with several mines being established around what is now Hollister including Mount Wilson Mines and White Sands Mines. Most of what is left today of these businesses can be found along Main Street which runs through the village center from east to west. Several businesses still remain such as Golden Corral Inn & Saloon which serve up delicious western-style cuisine; Big John'sgeneral store which sells groceries and gift items; Hastings Hardware & Supply store closed down in 2003 but reopened as a restaurant called Hastings' Old Store; Pecos Billiards & Poker Hall closed down in 2006 but reopened as a hotel called Pecos Billiards Resort; and finally Post Office Museum which houses some interesting local memorabilia from the community such as postcards, letters, tickets etc.. In recent years several other businesses have opened up in town including two restaurants - one called "The Dog House" serving modern Americanized Chinese cuisine while another more traditional cafe - "Villa Lisa" - offers Italian-American dishes like pizza and pasta dishes. Additionally, since 2005 Hollister has had its own weekly farmers market that takes place every Saturday morning near downtown! Today, Hollister is a busy trade center with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, and education. The history of Hollister begins with Jedediah Smith. Smith was born in 1767 in West Yorkshire England and came to America in 1787 as part of the first wave of English immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island. He would eventually become one of America's most successful farmers and entrepreneur. After arriving in California he began trading goods with Native Americans and fur traders before founding his own ranching business which quickly became successful. In 1828 Smith married Eliza Purdy Jones from Maine whom he had met while living among the Native American tribe known as the Haidas in that state. The couple moved to central California where they started a dairy farm that soon became very prosperous. In 1843 they erected a wooden church near their farm which still stands today as part of downtown Hollister's historic district. In 1850 John Cohan set up shop in nearby Redding selling goods from his boat anchored offshore during winter months when no other businesses existed on the riverbanks around Redding Creekmouth (present day Redding). From this humble beginning Cohan would go on to establish himself as one of Californias leading businessmen - serving as mayor (1868-72), member (1875-81) & treasurer (1889-93) - during some of its most turbulent times such as World War I & II He also left lasting footprints upon Hollister's history: One can find numerous Cohan descendants living here today!
