Hollister, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 21,883 at the 2010 census. Hollister is located on the Kern River and has been inhabited by humans since 635 AD when they were discovered by Mono people. The first European to see the area was José Tejada y Costantini on August 24, 1824. A post office called Hollister was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1893. Most of what is now Hollister was first populated by Mono people who live near the riverbanks. In 1862 an Anglo-American party led by developer Charles Wurtzel found gold near present-day Hollister while exploring for silver mines in southern Kern County. Wurtzel named his discovery "Hollister" after his family's home town of Halesworth, England. For many years it served as the only settlement within sight of Gold Rush miners operating in what is now Kern County; however, with the opening of Interstate 5 in 1951 and later a road system linking San Bernardino to Los Angeles County, most residents gradually moved away from their original sites around or near the river or its tributaries (the last such activity taking place around 1980). The city's economy grew rapidly during World War II due to wartime production for aircraft components and other war materials at nearby Decatur Air Force Base and elsewhere; however, following the end of World War II there was little growth except for a period of time between 1957 and 1960 when local businesses produced items for military use such as munitions manufacturing plants that had not closed down since 1945. After 1990s expansions into higher education (including establishment of University of Southern Californias' campus), professional services (law enforcement/firefighting/real estate) and retail sector have grown substantially while new development has cropped up throughout downtown areas including portions east of I-5 along Ulysses Road northward beyond City limits which make up much recent residential growth but were once part of downtown core before being annexed into newer neighborhoods today; this includes parts east side Embarcadero Road which ran past current day San Francisco consulate buildings prior to annexation into Fresno; much older commercial areas lying near both rivers including downtown areas along First Street southwest past old power plant site towards Interstate 5 service area are also included eventually within newer neighborhoods today although some older streets remain largely unchanged despite changing demographics

Hollister is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 27,561 at the 2000 census. It is located on the west side of the San Joaquin River and borders Stockton to the north and Modesto to the east. The land that would become Hollister was first occupied by Native Americans, including the Kumeyaay people who called it "Wah-wah-yuh". In 1847, prospectors discovered oil reserves near present-day Hollister when they struck a well near Redding. The town was founded on November 7, 1849 by James Folsom and Wm. H. Farnam with $5 in gold pieces given to them by Californian Governor Valentine Peabody as part of a gift from King George III of England. In 1860, Hollister became part of Nevada when that state was created out of parts of California and Oregon. A year later, on July 16, 1861, Nevada passed an act providing for county government within its boundaries and forouls were set up in each county seat to provide local representation in national government affairs. On January 1, 1865 Hollister became part of Sacramento County when that county was formed from parts of Los Angeles County and Yolo County. On February 14, 1879 Hollister residents voted 5-to-1 against annexation into Fresno County because they felt their city had more than enough amenities for its own population alone and wished to remain separate from Fresno’s growing suburbs (then known as “the Westside”). This vote demonstrated not only downtown Hollister’s independent streak but also its ability to attract merchants who desired quality shopping experiences without having their businesses dwarfed by nearby Fresno developments – something which many Eastside residents found difficult to emulate given their location just east of Interstate 5 on a main freeway artery.). A few years later on October 15 1880 an earthquake occurred measuring 6.0 on the Richter Scale (equivalent today to an 8.0 or 9.0 magnitude quake) approximately 10 miles south-southwest of downtown Hollister destroying much property along with killing at least 35 people instantly; this event served as a catalyst for municipal officials decision making regarding infrastructure development which followed over ensuing decades culminating in current day street names such as North Main Street/Majestic Avenue after some structures destroyed or damaged during the quake like St John's Chapel School & Masonic Temple survived unscathed while others lost all interior finishes including several blocks long former bedroom/bathroom suites now used as parking lot dividers between adjacent apartment buildings). angular rock formations still visible today near old center square - these are remnants from what may have been once large rhyolite boulders quarried about two miles northeast then transported downriver toward present day site where modern day sidewalks were laid less than 12 years ago!
