Hollister, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,914 at the 2000 census. Hollister is located about an hour and a half north of Fresno, the county seat. The Hollister area was first settled by the Kumeyaay people in the 18th century. They were later replaced by the Ohlone people. In 1853, James Hutton homesteaded land near what is now Hollister on what is now called Hutton Ranch. In 1876, John Mellencamp founded Whatcom County and named it for his friend and neighbor Jonathan Hollister on May 20 of that year. The town of Hollister was platted in 1907 through collaboration between Mellencamp and local developer Averill Harriman. The post office opened in 1909, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1951. Hollister has experienced significant growth since its founding; however, much of this growth has occurred outside of its borders due to Interstate 5 connecting nearby cities with larger markets while also serving as an important transportation corridor for goods moving westward from Southern California into Nevada and then eastward to points beyond. Additionally, numerous businesses have relocated to HollISTER over time due to its relatively low taxes (known locally as "the shopping tax") as well as access to quality schools and infrastructure resources that make it one of the most prosperous small towns in Kern County

Today Hollister is home to a variety of cultural attractions such as the annual Chocolate Festival and Arts & Crafts Exhibition which takes place over three days during autumn/winter; an outdoor movie theater complex called Regal Cinemas; antique stores; local restaurants;and a parade every February that features floats made out of cotton candy and other treats from various locations throughout the city

The city was founded in 1849 by General Mariano Vallejo and his wife Maria de la Cruz as a small community on the San Andreas Fault line between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 1857, Hollister became an incorporated town with a population of 507 residents. It was moved from its original location to its current location in 1865 when the first railroad through that area was completed.
