Beershebausen established what is now First Baptist Church on land donated by him in 1865 . As mentioned earlier prior to 1851 shotguns were not commonly carried among Mormons due to their belief that they were not equipped enough for combat On April 12th 1851 John Tilton erected his first post office building which still stands today on Main Street across from First Baptist Church . This building served as both Post Office and Postmaster General until 1861 when another office building became availableon Market Street just east of downtown . In 1861 another Act providing for Cannon Street Ferry became effective when it replaced the earlier ferryboat service between San Francisco and Point Reyes Station . The Hollisteroan community of Hollister began in the early 1800s when Jedediah Smith and his party discovered gold near today's Hollister. Because of its proximity to San Bernardino Mountains and its rich mining history, Hollister quickly became known as one of the most important mining towns in Southern California. In 1887, John Hollister established a post office here and started to sell goods from his home on Main Street. By 1899, he had built a two-story store with a garage and two other homes on what is now Fourth Street. Hollister's success as a mining town led to rapid growth after World War I when oil discoveries were made hereabouts. The boom years ended in the 1930s when production slowly declined because of competition from other mines throughout the state. However, during World War II, local businesses helped support military efforts by supplying food, ammunition, and water supplies; they also helped create an Army airfield nearby that served as training ground for fighter pilots during the war. As oil prices rose in the 1970s and 1980s, new developments began to take form around town: restaurants (including Red Lobster), bars/nightlife venues (including Grognol's Tavern), retail stores (including Sears & Roebuck), and more public works projects such as gutting old buildings for new construction or renovation purposes or landscaping changes that included planting large areas of palm trees instead of grasses or plants common in earlier times (the "Hollister Method"). In recent years there has been an increase concern over traffic congestion on Interstate 15 due to development within walking distance of downtown HollISTER along 4th Street which has caused many people not wanting their children exposed to high school level athletics so they can only see expensive cars driving down main street
