The population was 1,086 at the 2010 census. The town began as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and Stockton. In 1852, James Denton founded the Humboldt County Agricultural Society in Hollister with the goal of creating an agricultural center for the area. The society developed a horticulture garden that still remains today. In 1868, John Wesley Powell discovered gold in what is now Hollister and led a mining expedition there in search of it. A year later, George Cranch established a ranch there which became one of the largest in southern California. In 1915, Hollister College was founded by Drs. Harry Emerson Fosdick and Willis Wright with assistance from Jens Lehmann and others associated with Kaiser Aluminum Company's steel plant at Pittsburg Landing near Stockton. At first, only men were admitted to college; however later women were allowed to attend too under special circumstances (such as if they had children). Today Hollister College offers over 120 undergraduate programs and graduate degrees within seven faculties: Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; Education; Health Science/Health Professions; Liberal Arts & Sciences; Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science/Veterinary Technology/Food Science/Science Applications Engineering/Computer Science/. Today's economy relies heavily on agriculture production including wine grapes, olive oil, cheese products and other dairy products along with manufactured goods such as cars and appliances

Hollister is a small town in the southern San Joaquin Valley about an hour's drive from Fresno. It was founded by pioneers in 1868 as a mission station onranch of the Franciscan Mission system. Hollister was named for Blessed Nicholas Hollister, who had been canonized in 1888. The first post office in Hollister opened in 1870. The population of Hollister peaked at 1,500 in the 1920s, but has declined since then and now lies at around 150 people. The most common occupation of residents is farming, with some also engaged in heavy industry such as aluminum production or mining. Most people here are Catholic; there are several churches and chapels within the town limits. There is also a school, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade along with a number of after-school programs and summer camps available for children and their families. The founder of Hollister, Father John Donnellan, arrived here circa 1868 to found a new mission station following protracted travel from his previous location near Modesto California (the original site). In May 1870 he issued the first religious journal written in this area entitled "A Visit to Our Parish." Father Donnellan later served as pastor of St Ignatius' Catholic Church (later renamed Our Lady Help Of Christians) here until his death on December 5th 1896.
Hollister is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Hollister is located on the north side of Kern River and just east of the Kern County line with Bakersfield. It is adjacent to Menifee and Lancaster counties. The first permanent settler in what would become Hollister was H.G. Doddridge in 1873. The town was founded on April 14, 1875 by General James Fenton as a place where farmers could trade goods they had brought overland from central California. In 1888, the post office was renamed Hollister after Rear Admiral John Atherton Hollister who served as Commandant of Naval Militia District 10 during the Spanish-American War and later became PostmasterGeneral of California In 1919, an oil well named "Hollister" was discovered in what is now Menifee Valley outside of town; initial production began at this well in 1920 but production dwindled due to high water prices and other factors such as bad weather; however, some still produce today based off drilling operations that took place since then In 1951 when Kern County formed it had a population of only 9 people; however by 1990 its population had grown to almost 3900 people due largely to agricultural growth in nearby Porterville and unincorporated areas surrounding the town In 1998 it merged into neighboring Porterville with no vote or decision by residents
