The 1945 fire that destroyed most of downtown killed 111 people and left 50 houses standing including those used as barracks by American forces during World War II; they were completely gutted by flames that consumed everything inside without leaving any evidence outside such as brick or wood foundations remaining standing high enough to see what once stood there. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 9,818 people, 4,912 households, 2,810 families residing in the town. Hollister is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. It was founded in 1876 by Mormon pioneers and became a town after passage of the Homestead Act in 1862. The population was 20,000 at the 2010 census. Hollister is one of California's oldest incorporated towns. The name "Hollister" is from Old English holtre meaning "tooble" or "a hole in the ground." The history of Hollister goes back to 1876 when Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Hollister from Weber County, Utah. The men built a stockade around their log cabin and named it Hallettown after Brigham Young’s brother-in-law, Hiram Hollis. In 1881, an act of Congress placed Hollister within San Joaquin County on the east side of the Sacramento River. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major General George Bancroft to cross over the river and occupy present day Fresno County as part of his larger campaign against Confederate forces along this section of southern California known as Polynesia (the land between Sierra Nevada and Oregon). For unknown reasons – perhaps because he could not find enough volunteers for such an undertaking – Bancroft did not move his entire army acrossriver; instead he dispersed it inland across what would become Fresno County near where Mount Whitney now stands. A group led by Captain John Gifford crossed over on July 14th 1862 and founded what would become Hollister on October 17th 1865 under license from CPUK–the first white settlement west of Mexico City (today’s Mexico City). At that time there were no roads or trails leading into or out of town so travelers had to be content with following Native American trails which meandered through open country for days at a time until they reached either Hoover Dam or Stockton! As early as 1873 there were rumors that someone had spotted some gold coins buried among young trees on Adobe Creek just outside town limits; however nothing was ever found confirmation until1892 when prospector James Waddell discovered fourteen pieces weighing an aggregate total $1,500! Mining operations continued intermittently until 1905 when all but one vein failed to turn Silver! When World War I began America applied for entry into neutrality but did not receive approval until December 1917 upon hearing about Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare which disrupted shipping lanes off coasts North America including those supplying munitions ships sailing down Californian coastlines essential for British war effort . On January 6th 1918 President Woodrow Wilson announced US entry into World War I making Hollister one of only two American cities to do so . To commemorate America’s participation in WWI local businesses donated free clothes to soldiers worldwide starting February 4th 1918 through May 1919 inclusive Cheyenne Clothing Store located at 5200 First Street & Main Road serving Soldiers stationed at Camp Dodge and Naval Base Stockton before returning home by train November 25th 1919 providing clothing for citizens who participated in military service both domestically and abroad! On April Fool's Day 1922 Microsoft opened its first office inside then old Jardine Rubber Company building located at 2020 Adams Road also later used by Pacific Bell company offices before going dark circa 2006
