One early rancher, John Dooley Sr., started selling land hereabouts in 1902. He named his new ranch "Hollisters", after his two daughters - Blanche (born 1898) and Myrtie (born 1899). At that time much of Kern County lay within Tulare County; however, when it became apparent that some land east of Shasta Lake would be more profitable to farm than elsewhere due to its proximity to water sources, Dooley sold most or all of his holdings hereabouts including Hollisters Rancho de la Rioja east of Rancheria del Diablo Dam on February 25th 1919 which formed today's boundary between Kern and Delano Counties Many people from outlying areas along I-5A traveled through this area daily on their way southbound on I-5 until they reached Redding then continued down I-5 until they reached Yuba City before continuing another day southward on I-5 until they reached Fresno Today much of what used to make up this area are rural agricultural fields with scattered residences still standing including Villa Linda Estates & adjacent ranches which are now run by descendants of those original owners

The city was founded in 1853 by John Hollister and his brother Jameson as a citrus fruit packing town on the banks of the Salinas River. The name was changed to Hollister in 1876 after the discovery of orange juice by mistake while exploring the area. In 1916, Hollister became one of three cities that formed Redding along with Shasta City and Eureka. In 1922, Redding merged with Salinas to form a larger metropolitan area that included Hollister and all of Humboldt County. In 1951, Don Bollinger opened his first grocery store in Hollister which quickly became a favorite among residents due to its low prices and wide selection of groceries. Over time, other local businesses followed suit including an auto dealership, two medical offices and two massage parlors until finally there were ten stores in HollISTER when it merged with Redding-Salinas on January 1, 1997. Hollister has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming an agricultural center during World War II; experiencing rapid growth following Interstate 5 construction; seeing significant turnover within its workforce during the 1990s before culminating in stability through several decades of job growth; becoming increasingly suburban as more people commute into Redding-Salinas; and most recently experiencing gentrification spurred by increasing job opportunities downtown as well as new development near Interstate 5 freeway Exit 163 (the "Golden State Freeway").
