Hollister, California is a city in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 23,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hollister was founded in 1853 by Captain John Hollister and his wife Julia as a small trading post on the east side of Alma River. In 1862, Hollister became an incorporated town and annexed adjacent communities of Orinda and Pringles Valley. It was renamed Hollister in 1924 after James Fenton Hollister III who served as mayor from 1923 to 1925. In 1951 it annexed the smaller communities of Hornby and Sunnyside. In 1967, Hollister became one of fourteen cities that joined the new Modesto-Oakland-Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The MSA has since grown to include all of Stanislaus County and portions of Contra Costa County.

In 1951 Hollister merged with nearby Russian River Valley to form one large city that would include both townships and villages within its boundaries. After years of struggles with air pollution and other issues, Hollister renamed itself after Ethan Allen Greene, an early settler who helped develop the area around today’s downtown core. Today Hollister has emerged as one of Silicon Valley's most thriving communities for technology companies and professional athletes. The history of Hollister can be traced back to 1853 when George Ewing published a patent for a new system for watering crops called "Hollis-Ewing." The patent was granted to George on May 3rd, 1853 while he was living in Rancho El Alma near today's downtown core. Over time this system gradually gained popularity among farmers and they began to build their own systems using larger reservoirs or cisterns made out of materials such as clay or pigskin lining watertight logs or vaults above ground level where rainwater collected during heavy rains came down into cisterns throughout the day then stored overnight before being used next morning for irrigation purposes. This type of irrigation system eventually replaced traditional methods such as ditching land between rows (which could take up valuable real estate) or using buckets filled with rainwater brought over from higher up in elevation where water pooled during summer months then used during winter months to irrigate plants below ground level which prevented soil erosion due to groundwater seepage into surrounding hillsidesduring wet weather conditions). In addition to these commercial activities there were also numerous agriculture businesses doing things like raising chickens, beeskeeping, winemaking etc.; some still operate today including John Deere whose Complete Farming Simulator game starts off playing inside your house! With further development coming from Napa Valley railroadroads connecting Northern California with Southern Californias agricultural economy thanks largely to Eli Lilly & Co.'s efforts starting around 1850 developing vaccines against smallpox based products primarily sold through their company clinics across Northern California; farmers turned their attention towards growing grapes which soon became an important local crop contributing significantly both economically and environmentally due not only to climate constraints but also because warmer climates allow grapefruit trees To reach maturity faster yielding bigger fruit than any other kind of tree grown hereabouts allowing wine production beginning about 1800 producing millions gallons annually! Over time several smaller wineries managed by families got started producing wines country specific styles such as Zinfandel wines from Zinfandel grape vines grown near Livermore; Chardonnay wines from Chardonnay grape vines grown near Willits; Riesling wines from Riesling grape vineyards located just south east of Big Sur between Santa Rosa County & Napa County respectively; Pinot Noir wines from Pinot Noir grapevines located mainly around Rutherford Oakville vineyard northcentral Marin County etc.) until finally major wine producer like Mondavi Winery decided not expand into adjacent counties market share resulting in massive declines (-60% per decade since 1970) Vineyards Incorporated closed down entirely within 10 miles boundary Of City Limits becoming ghost towns while remaining dormant until recently when plans surfaced underway For them To reopen under another name currently unknown but hopefully we will hear something about it very soon…..
