Hillsborough is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of Fresno County and within Tulare County. The population was 3,554 at the 2010 census. At the time of the 1930 census, Hillsborough had a population of 1,075 people. The name "Hillsborough" was given to the town by Colonel John Sutter during his 1847-1848 explorations through central California. He named one of his settlements after General Bragg's regiment which he had captured at Palo Alto on October 27, 1846. The first store in Hillsborough opened its doors in 1870 as an independent business run by Nathaniel Hogg and his wife Fannie Hogg. The original store building still stands today and is used as a community center. In 1902, two brothers - George and Harry Sears - started a mercantile hardware store next door to the Hogg Store that would become one of the most successful businesses in Hillsborough history. The Sears Hardware Company remains open today with over 100 employees including many descendants of those who worked there before them. In 1932, when it became part of Fresno County, Hillsborough experienced its biggest growth period ever with more than doubling its population to 3,554 people from 1,075 people only three years earlier! Additionally, much development took place around this time including new housing developments such as Lakeshore Court and Gateway Village which continue to be popular residents destinations today! This growth spurt continued into 1933 when county officials decided that Hillsborough should be designated a city! This designation brought about even more rapid growth for what was then just a little farming town with a population size barely larger than that of downtown Fresno! During this time also some great new restaurants were opened up such as Pasha's Oriental Cafe and Big Daddy's BBQ & fries where locals could enjoy excellent food while outside enjoying all types Of outdoor activities! It wasn't until 1949 when another major development happened which completely changed how everyone lived in Hillsborough; it was becoming known as "the birth place" for both mineral oil Refineries along Interstate 5 (I-5) northward from here which caused many manufacturing jobs to move out into other parts of California due to high taxes imposed by then Governor Redwood Shriver! However despite these challengesTimes have changed radically since then with many new businesses being established throughout this growing metropolis now totaling almost 2 thousand workers employed directly or indirectly by local companies!! A new community was founded here in 1860 by General James Bountiful when he surveyed part of what later became Berkeley County for UC Berkeley students following his purchase of land east of Eureka Creek. By 1870, businesses had grown up enough that incorporation as a citywd occurred; however only three blockslong until downtown comprised only small businesses with no room for schools or other public services since much property had been bought by UCBerkeley trustees for themselves instead. In 1875 when Yolo County was created from parts of Humboldt and Sierra counties, Hillsborough became its county seat; however due to lack of population growth over time it reverted back to being an unincorporated city on April 11, 1912 (see History Timeline: 1912). On January 1st 1919 election - just hours before statehood - voters adopted Measure M (population 914), which provided for cities having right-of-way over rural areas without special tax privileges while also creating new rights including taxing highway traffic thereby giving potential mayors more power than ever before within their cities limits! This jump ahead in municipal government was largely due to City Manager Arthur Ashe who served two terms starting on May 1st 1920 until his retirement effective December 31st 1924! He had helped lead implementation begin throughout large sections—including those north central between Oakland and Waco—of El Dorado Plaza Plan designed by planner Clarence King with aide from future mayor Ricardo Ramos leading design team responsible for planning streetscape features along major arterial routes across town center during late1920s/early30s Chicano Boom era jobs boom period
