Hillsborough is a city in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Hillsborough Peninsula on which it sits and its hills are home to many beautiful trees and occasional wildfires. The first humans to live in what is now Hillsborough were the Hupa people who lived from about 8400 BC to 4100 AD. In 1846, Jedediah Smith discovered gold in the area and founded Illinois Mining District #2 on the peninsula. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel John C. Hill (1793-1850), one of several men who explored parts of California during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1851, General James Kippenberger ordered Captain Elisha Hale to investigate reports of land rich in gold near Sacramento. Hale's party found evidence that he had been right about there being gold worth finding and made a claim on what became known as Rancho Brazos de la Sierra (Brazos de la Sierra Gold Country). When General Kippenberger learned of this development, he ordered Hale's group destroyed by order of his successor, William Walker. However, when news reached him of what had happened he dispatched his own forces to investigate and found no gold but rather Indian artifacts hidden among the rocks! The local citizens then voted to name their new town after General Kippenberger's friend and predecessor at Rancho Brazos de la Sierra—Hillsborough! The first post office opened in Hillsborough on December 12th, 1852; it was renamed Sacramento in 1862 because of its location within Californias newly formed state government! On July 15th 1860 an avalanche killed thirty nine people living along bluffs east side Of US 101 just south Of present day San Francisco Bay Area CA On January 17th 1865 Union Major George Armstrong Custer led his troops into battle against Native American warriors at Creek Station west of today’s Fresno County CA A portion including modern day Fresno County was acquired by Kings County on December 1st 1850

In 1917, when Rancho San Vicente de las Vegas was acquired by William Randolph Hearst as part of his Hearst Corporation land empire, Hillsborough incorporated as a city under the name "Hillsborough" on November 3rd of that year. In 1923, Raymond Chandler wrote about life in Granite City during Prohibition: "There wasn't much crime then because people were too busy getting drunk or doing drugs." That same year saw the opening of Paramount Pictures studios adjacent to Granite City High School which would contribute significantly to its growth over time. In 1984, Hillsborough voters approved Measure M censuring Mayor Dianne Feinstein for her support of Proposition 8 becoming an state constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman only instead of being open to any gender pairings without voter approval or consent from all interested parties including homosexuals and anyone with two biological parents regardless of their relationship status or non-religion unaffiliated with any religion...On November 5th 1982 mayor Dianne Feinstein was reelected unopposed afterMeasure M passed by more than 80% majority... Measure M remains an important part of local history today because it helped define how schools are policed here today... On February 14th 1990 Mayor Dianne Feinstein announced she would be running for reelection against challenger Roy Romer Jr.. On election night Roy Romer won by over 50%, making him first African AmericanMayorofHillsborough since 1913
