Hillsborough is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 46,814 at the 2010 census. The history of Hillsborough dates back to 1853 when a group of men from Santa Clara County founded the town on land that now includes much of present-day Hillsborough City. In 1872, part of what is now eastern Hillsborough Township (including portions of today's eastern hills) was annexed into San Francisco; this annexation created new municipalities within San Francisco proper including Palo Alto and Menlo Park which did not give up their right to vote or property qualifications for incorporation into cities without consent from their respective townships. Consequently, Palo Alto voted against incorporation into San Francisco while Menlo Park accepted it without objection. In 1875, an act providing for municipal election by districts was passed by the state legislature; this act became effective on January 1st, 1876: all but two of Peninsula’s 24 wards (northwest corner district), with precincts located east and west of Daly City Avenue southward to Gilroy Boulevard were placed within newly formed Palo Alto Municipal District No. 5 behalf of Menlo Park residents who had refused to be incorporated into any other municipality despite being offered voting privileges therein - prior thereto they had been classed as “resident aliens” under Chapter XXIII (2) Statutes Of California [1871], due chiefly to lack thereof having been furnished by either county board or Legislature...On November 3rd proposition A (1) failed at 54% with 794 votes cast – resulting only in non-partisan member Hiram Sibley becoming mayor pro tem...Two years later on November 3rd proposition B (2), which succeeded A with 821 votes cast resulteding Mayor Sibley re-elected unopposed...With passage through both houses following ratification by voters)...the new city charter provided for mayoral election every four years instead of annually like then...In 1898/99 another annexation took place when Livermore Valley became part as well: Livermore Alameda Union School District No 2 included parts adjacent to modern day Hillborough City Limits forming part thereof until 1991 when Livermore Contra Costa Union School District merged into BART

Hillsborough, California is a small city in the Santa Clara County, California region of Northern California. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Peninsula between San Francisco and Oakland across from Silicon Valley. Hillsborough was founded in 1868 by John Brougham and James Purdy as an agricultural community on what is now Yerba Buena Island. In 1870, it became part of San Francisco and in 1872 it became a town when part of the Rancho split off from the larger Rancho Guanacaste estate. The first post office in Hillsborough was established in 1868 with Wm. Huggins as its first sender and it continued until 1893. In 1896, Hillsborough annexed parts of Fremont to become its new municipality although Fremont had been annexed by San Francisco earlier that year. The annexation created a problem because there were no streets or water supplies within the boundaries of both towns so they shared services such as mail delivery and firefighting. In 1898, after much discussion, Hillsborough voters decided to secede from San Francisco due to their dissatisfaction with City Hall's decision-making process and began to build their own courthouse which would be located on Main Street in downtown Hillsborough. In 1907, during World War I, Hillsborough joined the United States Army Air Service as one of two American military installations along South Bay Naval Refueling Point (now Treasure Island). Aftermath: From Pearl Harbor To WWII After World War II ended there were many civilian demand for housing units that never materialized because no industrial area sprang up around what was once an airbase surrounded by warehouses full of equipment used by fighter planes during wartime - all this land has since been developed into high tech campuses like Googleplex etc . The airport closed down in 1974 but some buildings still stand today including Hangar 1 which housed Lockheed Martin Aircraft factory during WW2
