Hillsborough is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 66,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Bernardino County after Sylmar and home to the University of Southern California (USC), one of the most prestigious universities in America. Hillsborough is also located on Interstate 10 and is connected to downtown Los Angeles by a bypass road. The first town in what would become Hillsborough was called "Langley" because two settlers from Langley, England, purchased land there in 1853. A post office named Hillsborough opened in 1857, but no town was established until 1870 when citizens of Pasadena petitioned for incorporation as a city. The name changed to Hillsborough when it became part of the City of Los Angeles on February 20, 1907. Hillsborough experienced significant growth during World War II with its heavy reliance on military employment. The war generated an estimated $14 million (in 1945 dollars) worth of business activity that led to new housing developments and other infrastructure projects that continue to this day. After the war ended, however, some industrial businesses began to leave and joblessness reached levels not seen since before World War II; this created problems for Hillsborough's future economic development potential. In 1965 Hillsborough joined forces with neighbouring Fullerton to form what would become known as "the twin cities". In recent years Hillsboro has seen major redevelopment including luxury apartment buildings being built along I-10 south of downtown LA and additions such as a new shopping mall near USC campus which has greatly helped increase its economy and boosted its profile within Southern California
