The city was founded in 1876 by Northern Californians and Mexican Americans who had been displaced during the 1848 Gold Rush. It became part of the United States following its admission to the Union on November 8, 1912. Hillsborough is located on the Kern River and is close to Bakersfield and Mexicali. The history of Hillsborough begins with two families who were displaced during the Gold Rush in 1868: John Coyle and his wife Mary Ann (Cleveland). They arrived in May 1870 from Stockton, California after foot-wading their way overland from San Joaquin Valley through Death Valley National Park. In 1876 they built a cabin on a bluff aboveuerlooking present-day downtown Hillsborough. John Coyle ran a sawmill there for about twenty years until it burned down in 1907; his widow continued to run it until her death in 1951. In 1911 local citizens formed an organization called "The American Legion" to support veterans' campaigns for political power in America after World War I; this led to the first election of mayor among self-identified "Hillsboroughers." George Winton was elected mayor on November 7th 1912 with 54% of the vote against incumbent William Haggerty's 44%. During Winton's terms as mayor (1912–1916), much progress was made within both City Hall and then into Downtown which now fronts Main Street between 2nd Avenue South and 3rd Avenue South while two blocks east of that sits City Hall Annex which houses some of City Hall's original departments including Planning & Community Development, Streets Department & Water Resources Bureau; today all three buildings are leased out primarily as office space or events spaces including The Guild House which used to be home to Dance Westphalen School before being taken over by Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce circa 1990) 2nd Avenue south bisected by Euclid Avenue once served as an alley leading from downtown back to Mrs Cleveland’s cabin while 3rd Avenue south bisected by Charlotte Street once served as an alley leading fromMrs Cleveland’s Cabin directly across from 1st Ave south

Hillsborough is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. Hillsborough was founded on November 15, 1888 by Don A. Haggerty and his brother-in-law, W. B. The population of Hillsborough was 1,814 at the 2000 census; it increased to 3,811 by 2010. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. The hills overlooking downtown were part of an ancient Native American site that has been located near present-day Hillsborough since prehistoric times according to archaeological evidence gathered from several digs conducted over the years by archaeologists with UC Berkeley’s Archaeological Services Department[2]. Famed explorer Hernán Cortés probably sighted this area while exploring San Francisco Bay in 1542 when he journeyed northward from Mexico City through what is now Fresno County towards Tiburon Peninsula[3], following today’s route of Interstate 880 between Richmond and San Rafael[4]. At one point during his exploration he may have anchored off what is now Point Reyes National Seashore,[5] as evidenced by evidence of an animal carcass found there on shoreline dating back at least 10 thousand years old[6]; however no direct evidence exists to support such a claim beyond circumstantial evidence alone.[7] In 1675 Father Miguel de la Garza y Salinas estimated that about 27 miles (41 km) northeast of modern Hillsborough was another large Indian village inhabited byenos or Coast Miwok Indians who had abandoned their traditional hunting grounds east of Point Reyes due to Spanish encroachment upon their lands[8]. Today only fragments remain of these villages along with archeological artifacts associated with them including pottery shards,[9] trade beads,[10] arrowheads,[11] as well as tool caches featuring stone tools dating back more than 4000 BP found at sites around Point Reyes National Seashore[12][13][14][15], some weighing up to 20 pounds (10 kg). It should be noted that though these sites are long gone they still provide important clues about local indigenous cultures across this vast geographical area at a time when detailed research into ancient human settlements elsewhere in Northern California remains lacking.[16][17][18] Nevertheless thorough excavation continues currently being conducted adjacent to Arroyo Seco Creek withinpresent-day Sammamish Park in order to better understand prehistoric lifepatternsand patterns withinthe vicinityofHillsboroughanearly19thcentury Californiansettlement
