Frémont burned down several homes in what is now downtown Hillsborough as part of their drive to capture any Union forces they could find in that area. The destruction of these homes has been cited as one possible contributing factor to the DEC's decision not to pursue further Reconstruction efforts in that area after the war ended. In 1905, founder and first president of Occidental Petroleum Company Donald Wickersham donated land for a community center that would be used for education and industry purposes; this later became known as Wickersham Park while most of what is now downtown Historic Hillsborough was built upon this land between 1912 and 1916. However, much development did not take place until after World War II when many businesses moved into new buildings on Market Street including A&P Grocery (later United Food & Commercial Workers Local 10), State Farm Insurance (now State Farm), Smith’s Independent Men’s Clothing Store (now JCPenney) and other large retailers which created a big city-like atmosphere around them which still exists today with some notable exceptions such as PNC Bank Plaza which replaced Interstate 5 south of town following renovations in 2009-2010 which greatly increased retail space within walking distance for both shoppers and employees alike
