The history of guns in Hillsborough County dates back to the early 1800s. The first gun that was used in this area was a muzzleloader, which was used by pioneer farmers and ranchers. By 1851, there were two shotguns in use in Hillsborough County. One of these shotguns belonged to Major James G. Witherspoon, who was the founder and first sheriff of Hillsborough County. In 1857, a revolver was introduced into the United States and became very popular in America. This weapon allowed people to carry handguns without having them confiscated by law enforcement officers. From 1865 until 1915, there were no police departments in Hillsborough County; it was responsible for its own security force, which consisted of private individuals. By 1915, however, there were two departmental police forces: one located within the city limits of Tampa and another located outside of Tampa. Throughout most of its history, Hillsborough County banned handguns because they were considered too dangerous and not appropriate for civilian use. However, this ban changed on multiple occasions due to various changes in society and public opinion. For example, during World War II (1941-1945), handguns were accepted as part of the military arsenal after being reclassified as rifles under new regulations put into place by the U.S government. In 1870, they renamed it Hillsborough after Lieutenant Colonel George C. Hill who had commanded an American brigade during the Mexican–American War and who had been their friend for many years before that. The post office opened in 1872 with A.P White as postmaster; John F Kennedy Boulevard ran through town limits then and mail was delivered to Hillborough from nearby Menlo Park until 1905 when Menlo Park became part of San Francisco

After serving as a center for citrus production in southern California for many years, Hillsborough lost its status as an agricultural center when irrigation became available from nearby Kern River valleys. However, it remains important to the community because of its location close to major airports and other population centers.
