Gun cleaning history in Hillsborough, California began in the early 1800s. In 1852, George Patton and his brothers started a gunsmith shop on the corner of Bayshore Boulevard and Nimbus Avenue. The business grew over the years and by 1912, Patton had built a large garage next door. In that year, he also founded the American Legion post #1 in Hillsborough with other veteran soldier's associations. In 1923, Clarence Larkin opened his local hardware store on Polk Street in Hillsborough. He was one of the first owners to sell firearms as well as repair them. From 1934-1974, Larkin was President of the Hillsborough Gun Club which met at his store twice monthly until it disbanded due to lack of memberships

Today most residents know about or have experienced Hillsborough through its ties to baseball - particularly as a result of USS Padres (1985–2005), which played out its entire eight-year existence at Naval Air Station Miramar on land adjacent to present day Hillcrest Boulevard and Harbor Drive within easy walking distance for almost all road users inside and outside the ballpark complex. According to one estimate only 10% or soofthe City's population resides within any one zip code; yet more than 60%of all businesses operating in town are located within just 12 blocks radius around Stadium Drive/Hillcrest Boulevard

In 1948, Hillsborough annexed part of nearby Brentwood Heights which gave the community a total population of over 200 residents (at that time). In recent decades, Hillsborough has seen a steady decline in popularity due largely to two factors: 1) a lack of major industry or development within walking distance of the community; and 2) problems with water quality which have led to numerous health concerns among residents since 2003. However, there are tentative plans underway by some stakeholders including government officials and business leaders for redevelopment of parts of hillsborough into new mixed-use developments that would target retail and commercial uses as opposed to residential use alone
