The rifle was re-christened “The General” by president Harry Truman when it was displayed at National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., on May 11, 1949 following its presentation at a Gun Show sponsored by HRPA held at The Armory Show Exhibition Hall in New York City that year
Hillsborough is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. Hillsborough was originally founded by Donner and his men as a wagon town on the Feather River in 1847. The name came from their discovery of high hills that would offer excellent grazing for their horses. In 1892, the city voted to annex adjacent Rancho Seco and its population increased to 25,000. The first commercial development in Hillsborough was a flour mill built in 1888 by Jesse Haines and Wm. Atherton. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1893, but reopened two years later under new ownership and changed its name to the Modern Mill Company. Mills such as this were key catalysts for growth during the late 19th century; they provided jobs for people who grew crops and manufactured goods for local markets. The company also constructed a sawmill and gristmill at what is now Westfield Shopping Center in 1896. During World War II, Hillsborough became one of the most heavily bombed cities in America due to its proximity to Japan's military airfields across Northern California. The bombing killed over 100,000 people and left more than 1 million homeless or displaced within three months after the attack on Hiroshima
