The first people to arrive in what is now Hillsborough were the Ohlone people who built seven villages on or near where they lived today. The first permanent settler was George Richards who arrived in 1838 and platted what is now downtown Hillsborough with land he had purchased from the indigenous community. Richards named his town after Sir John Ayer Hill, a British diplomat who helped negotiate peace negotiations between Spain and America during the Mexican–American War. During World War II, Hillsborough served as a naval air base for aircraft operations over Northern California due to its location at Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1957, it became home to one of two campuses of Stanford University (the other being Palo Alto). In 1960, when Silicon Valley began to form around Stanford and elsewhere nearby, Hillsborough became an important center for technology industry growth. In recent decades, Hillsborough has seen significant redevelopment with mixed-use projects such as retail/office buildings; residential neighborhoods such as Hunters Point and Southport; and new open space including Interstate 680's Donnybrook Park which offers views ofSan Francisco Bay Bridge across Elliott Bay. One result has been increased traffic congestion on I-80 eastbound near downtown because developers have put up large office towers without giving enough space for cars to exit and enter bypass lanes adjacent to I-880 ramps leading into downtown

Hillsborough is a small city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 42,872 at the 2010 census. Hillsborough is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and it is bordered by Anaheim to the south, Orange to the east, Venice Beach to the north and Westminster to the west. The first humans arrived in what is now Hillsborough about 10,000 years ago. Many cultures lived there for centuries before arriving into America. The Mission Santa Ana de Anza founded a mission here in 1795 and soon after other missions were established nearby including San Bruno (founded 1821), Hercules (1827), and Monterey (established 1847). In 1873 when California became a state, Hillsborough became part of Anaheim County. There was no rail service between Anaheim and Hillsborough until 1911 when Southern Pacific Railroad started serving both cities with passenger trains. In 1914 an electric light railway was built from Garden Grove to Huntington Beach which continued until 1978 when it was replaced by Interstate 805 freeway. On July 20th 1962 a devastating fire destroyed much of downtown Hillsborough leaving only one block standing - this block still stands today as its namesake block - called Market Street Station Historic District preservation ordinance #2-1963 which designates that district as a historical landmark
The first Europeans to visit Hillsborough were the Spanish in 1769. The area was surveyed by Juan Rodriguez de Mendoza in 1776 and was named Rancho San Antonio after the Santisima Trinidad mission, located about a mile away. In 1821, José Joaquín Moraga discovered gold near present-day Hillsborough when he explored the region for grazing land on his rancho Los Alamitos. The discovery led to overpopulation of the area and a lack of available land, which caused conflict between Moraga's Rancho San Antonio and other ranchers. In 1847, Jose Angel Borge patented what is now downtown Hillsborough. Borge bought 1,500 acres (6 km2) of land from Juan Manuel Estrada for $10 per acre ($686 per km2). He founded the city of Hillsborough with this land as its center. By 1850, there were over 100 homes in downtown Hillsborough and over 1,000 people living in areas surrounding it. The population continued to grow during the 1851–1853 California Gold Rush while also increasing during subsequent years as more gold was found throughout California. During World War II, Hillsborough played an important role in helping British forces Invaders enter California through the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay Area using submarines using acoustic camouflage techniques which allowed them to avoid detection by American military aircraft flying overhead at high altitudes. The city also hosted rationing camps for troops stationed in California during World War II
