Hillsborough, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,065 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Bernardino County by population and the second-largest in the county. The original inhabitants of Hillsborough were the Tongva people who lived on an area now bounded by present-day Interstate 10 to the east, Interstate 15 to the south, and Riverside Boulevard to the west. The Tongva moved out of their homeland about 1825 when they were forced off of their ancestral land by white settlers from Mexico. A mission was founded here in 1828 and named Mission San Gabriel Arcangeli after St. Gabriel that had died nearby a few years earlier. In 1853, Rancho Cucamonga was granted to José Santiago de la Garza for his own use as grazing land for sheep and cattle outside of Los Angeles proper; it passed into hands of others until it was sold to George Wetherspoon's heirs in 1865. Leland Stanford bought Rancho Cucamonga from Wetherspoon's heirs on November 12, 1868; he named it "Hillsborough" with additions such as "Stanford" (1869) and "Montclair" (1914). The town site was chosen because it lay midway between Los Angeles proper and Monterey Park on both sides of I-10 (the old US 10), bluffs overlooking those cities rising above what would become downtown Hillsborough during its early years: On October 25, 1907 – one year after incorporation – Mayor Harry Payson dedicated City Hall which still stands today at 5th Street/I-10 West corner - thus becoming only one city block away from downtown Los Angeles! The 1906 earthquake destroyed much of Southern California but not Hillsborough where most Ofsthorps lived including many prominent citizens like Jens Jensen who lost all his wealth in stock market crashes before starting a successful grocery store chain that eventually became known as Safeway Stores Incorporated today’s Kroger Co., Inc.. In 1915 there were over 1 million people living in Southern California due to gold discoveries along El Camino Real corridor some 5 miles north On December 22nd 1913 two accidents occurred killing 14 people near Ridgecrest when an express wagon carrying passengers derailed going down a hill outside town limits while enroute from Visalia to Pasadena(Pasadena & Simi Valley Railroad tracks crossed just east of ridgecrest). An inquest jury found no fault with drivers or engines but recommended pupil instruction for all drivers going down hillsides especially night express wagon drivers

Hillsborough was founded in 1867 by Lt. George Hills and his father, Capt. George Hill. The town was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman, who had led the Union army in the American Civil War. The first settler were two brothers, James and John Brougham. In 1870, Captain Hill laid out a townsite on what is now east of I-5 near what is now Commerce Drive. The first post office was built in 1874 and the first store opened in 1875. At that time, the only transportation available to residents of Hillsborough was horse and buggy or walk to town from their homes on Ridgecrest Road.
