Hesperia is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and is bordered by Lancaster to the south and east, Ontario to the north, and Pasadena to the west. The townsite dates back to 1871 when ranching pioneers founded a small community called Spring Branch on land that now forms part of Hesperia. In 1892, two brothers named William Hutton and Harry Chandler purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of what would become Hesperia from Colonel George Hearn for $1 per acre (0.24 ha). In 1903, they subdivided their land into streets and platted them as Hesperia Downs subdivision which included portions of Lancaster and Ontario counties. In 1907, another brother named Harry Chandler bought some additional acres adjoining William Hutton's original holdings in Hesperia Downs subdivision. This resulted in additional streets being laid out including North Street (now Playa Vista Boulevard), South Street (now Reseda Boulevard), East Street (now Western Avenue), West Street (now White Sands Boulevard), Midway Avenue (now Villa Park Drive), Eastwood Avenue (now Imperial Highway) and Chandler Road which still exists today as Midway Boulevard. On October 15, 1912, following passage of Proposition 8 by a referendum vote in California, Hesperia voted "No" on Measure M which sought to establish same-sex marriage statewide within the state. Prior to this vote no public services were available within town limits so residents relied upon neighboring Lancaster for all essential needs such as water supply and mail service until 1969 when Hesperia became an incorporated city with its own City Hall under Mayor John Fenton Sr.. On November 3rd 1893 Charles Smedley donated land comprising what now lies between Monterey Peninsula Parkway/Hwy 101 & PCH/US 101 near present day Anza Village for use as a Model Railroad Community known as “Hesperia” becoming one of only 5 model railroad communities authorized by Congress during World War I . TheModelRailroadCommunity was dedicated on April 10th 1914 & opened for operation by Mr . Wm Atherton President & General Manager American Railway Association who made it possible for children throughout America to enjoy trains without having to leave home
