Hesperia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It lies along the southern edge of the Mojave Desert and is bordered by Joshua Tree National Park to the west, Sacto Valley to the north, and Mono Lake to the east. The Hesperia name may derive from "horsetail" (a type of grass), which grows abundantly in this area due to warm summer weather and ample rainfall. Rancho Los Coyotes was given to his brother-in-law John Goodwin Richardson in 1853 as part of Goodwin's homestead settlement near Twentynine Palms Boulevard and Highway 395).[2] The first post office at Hesperia opened in 1875,[3] and remained open until 1893.[4] The first store in town was established by Wm Halsey & Bros., a grocery store that closed down around 1907 because it could not compete with larger stores opening up throughout Kern County during that time period such as Midway Market or City Hall Grocery Store. By 1911 there were only two businesses left operating out of town - a hotel[5][6][7] and an Amherst News Service building which served as both local telephone exchange[8][9][10][11], court house[12], jail[13], post office[14], schoolhouse[15][16], doctor's office[17],[18], blacksmith shop[19],[20]; all others having closed by then or been converted into housing developments such as San Ysidro Mesa or Lakeside Drive.[21],[22]. During World War II, Hesperia became one of several strategic towns located within Nazi controlled territory in Southern California due its proximity to bomber lines over downtown Las Vegas; however, no residents were drafted into military service during that war years.[23] After World War II ended, many residents moved away from their homes for various reasons including economic dislocation caused by postwar inflation,[24],[25] technological advances such as television,[26] social changes reflecting suburbanization throughout America,[27],[28]'s entry into world war I through alliances entered into with Germany[] [][]'s declaration of war against Austria[] [][]', [29]'s entry into World War II through alliesEntryInto Europe []>]()[']]().
