In 1957, The Hornaday rifle company merged with SCA and began manufacturing precision firearms under license from ACM (the original manufacturer of shooting clubs). At this time, membership at SCA dwindled slightly but continued operations at their main range until 1978 when they closed down due to financial constraints. Today, there is still a small contingent of active members who participate in various events throughout the year at the old Range located off Magnolia Boulevard near Highland High School. During these years, many talented individuals have learned how to shoot targets using traditional methods like Parenting magazine silhouette shootings or Trap & Hike shoots held annually on April Fool's Day. Some notable shooters from past eras include Donny Wickersham (1952-1959), Phil Mickelson (1973-1981), Darrell Biever (1976-1982), Jerry Boykin (1989-1991), Chuck Weisner Jr.(1992-1994) and Jay Sigel(1996-1998). In addition to these elected officials there are three appointed by Mayor Pro Tem with experience in public service: Jeffrey Becker (code enforcement officer), David Gonzalez (firefighter/EMT) and Omar Gonzalez (police officer/community relations specialist). There are no limits on how many times a person can serve on the council or how long they can hold office but all citizens have an opportunity to voice their opinion during town meetings held monthly except for May which coincides with State Fair week.
Hesperia was founded by Antonio Palou in 1864. The town grew quickly due to the discovery of gold in the area, and by 1872 it had a population of over 500 people. In the 1880s, Hesperia began commuter rail service to nearby San Bernardino. By the early 20th century, Hesperia had become an important regional center for dairy and agricultural production.
