The Hesperia Rifle and Pistol Club formed on February 15, 1903 in Hesperia, California. The club was chartered with the purpose of providing shooting and other sporting events throughout the county. On September 17, 1906, the club held its first annual meeting which was attended by members from nearby cities including Arroyo Grande, Big Sur, and Pasadena. In 1912, the club made a trip to Denver to attend the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Annual Meeting which produced new legislation that allowed for organized shooting contests across state lines. In 1925, Hesperia NRA held its first convention which featured a rifle/pistol match between United States shooters from Los Angeles and San Francisco. The following year saw the addition of a shotgun division which resulted in an overall increase in membership to over 100 individuals. In 1934-1935 there were various changes taking place within NRA as result of World War II; these included a move away from traditional rifle/pistol matches towards target practice events as well as the establishment of regional chapters across California. At this time also came about changes within Hesperia NRA with replacement of many leadership positions with more experienced individuals such as future Mayor Don Cochran and Treasurer Harry van der Kolk among others. In 1949-1950 there was another major change within NRA when then President Harry Van der Kolk resigned due to health concerns after serving for nearly 40 years at the helm of NRA. Van der Kolk had been instrumental in developing modern gun safety features such as trigger locks and firearm identification cards before his departure while others such as Treasurer John “Jock” Heiderberger took over muchacho role running member affairs until finally retiring in 1958 coinciding with enactment of California Penal Code section 644 (b) making it unlawful for anyone under 18 years old to possess or use any type of weapon without parent or guardian’s permission. With no president remaining after 1950s there were further succession challenges during that decade resulting in several successful impeachment proceedings against numerous board members including current President Jeff Hennessey who has been sitting on the board since 2003 despite not having served an entire term since he succeeded Hennessey two years earlier upon his election victory over incumbent Art Larkin who had served three terms consecutively prior thereto). In 1992-1993 Jeff Hennessey unsuccessfully ran for reelection unopposed becoming second longestserving president ever behind only then current President Jeffery Strong who has currently serve since 2006 having previously served one full term(2006-present). Presidentships have typically lasted around five years maximum but have occasionally been vacated due to age or illness leaving open seat long into next succeeding administration should no successor be found prior to 2020 whether that is through gubernatorial recall or special election process
