Hesperia, California is located in the Central Valley of California. It was founded by Spanish settlers in 1836. The town was named for José Joaquim Hesperia, a naturalist and explorer who explored the area in 1827. The first post office in Hesperia opened in 1839. In 1861, the town became a county seat of Kern County. By 1912, Hesperia had a population of 20,000 people and it was the largest city in Kern County at that time. In 1916, Hesperia joined the Union League as one of its original townships. The township's motto is "Novo Estatemps". In 1966, Hesperia became part of Riverside County when it was split off from Kern County. According to the 2010 census, the population of Hesperia is 73,721 people.
Hesperia was founded on July 28, 1848 by James W. Hesperia and his wife Nancy. The name comes from the Mexican word for "west." The original post office in Hesperia was established on October 3, 1848. The town of Hesperia grew rapidly from its incorporation in 1851 to its peak population of around 100 people in 1860. By 1870, the town had shrunk to a few hundred residents and there was no formal government until 1865 when a Board of Supervisors was set up to manage affairs. In 1880, the city became part of Sacramento County and experienced rapid growth as new businesses opened up and more people moved into the area. By 1910, Hesperia had declined slightly in population but still boasted some impressive industrial facilities including a water wheel (now gone), an sawmill, a printing press, and a chemical works. Despite these successes, however, during World War II Hesperia again lost its status as an important city due to shortages of materials needed for war production. In 1947, however, following passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act which increased state spending nationally (a result of the Great Depression), Hespora regained much-needed funding which allowed it to revive and increase its economy once again
