Hesperia is a small unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert, north of Bakersfield and east of Yosemite National Park. The area now known as Hesperia was part of Rancho San Joaquin de Arcadia Mexican land grant given to John Sutter and his brother-in-law, Mariano Vallejo in 1847. In 1853, portions were granted to other members of the Vallejo family including brothers Willard W. Phelps and George Hearst who would later found Californian statehood rights organizations. The town's name comes from Spanish for "hills beyond" or "borderland". Hesperia was founded by Captain James Averell during World War I as an American military base for soldiers training in Paso del Norte Province, Mexico. After the war ended Averell sold portions of his property to various individuals and businesses until it became what is now Hesperia proper in 1926 when he donated all but two acres (0.8 km²) to the city of Bakersfield which then renamed it Hesperia after him. In 1945 local citizens petitioned Chico County to establish a post office at their location; they received approval in 1948 and opened on October 7th with one mailbag per week. The first Postmaster General was Mrs Grace Fenton who served until her death on September 3rd, 1954 while she also presided over Hesperia's incorporation as a town under California law that same year; it took effect November 1st following passage by the California State Legislature without debate). A new high school opened its doors at Hesperia High School on February 13th, 1951 after being built with $1 million from locally raised funds - half from Mayor Jerry Brown himself! Hesperia is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and has a sister city relationship with Tijuana, Mexico. The towns are adjacent to each other on U.S. Route 95 north of Interstate 15 and east of downtown Los Angeles proper. The first post office in Hesperia was established in 1887, but its name is not mentioned until 1907 when it changed to Mesquite Post Office due to confusion between both places having the same name for two years consecutively (1885-1887). In 1912, Hesperia became an incorporated municipality with a population of 3 residents (1 store clerk and 2 soldiers stationed there during World War I). In 1925, Hesperia's only high school opened - Central High School which still serves as one of Hesperia’s primary schools today. Today there are over 30 businesses that have Either been closed or moved out because they were too close to Highway 95 or because they didn't make it past building codes changes mandated by state legislator Don Henley who also happened to be mayor at the time; however most remain open despite this inconvenience such as GAS light bulb company which has been anchored near Main Street since 1978 primarily because it can't be moved out no matter what! A major event that took place in early 2017 was when Spanish Fork Brewery announced their intention to move their corporate offices from Riverside County into Hesperia citing demographic reasons including more people living within commute distance than ever before while continuing operations out-of-state; however less than 24 hours later Mexican restaurant chain El Rancho announced plans to build a massive new campus about 8 miles away from town center that would house up to 8000 employees across twelve restaurants; this quickly sent prices for groceries soaring throughout much of central valley especially aroundMain Street where grocery stores have long competed against fast food chains with little benefit for consumers
