Hesperia is a small town in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of the Kern River, northeast of Redding and southeast of Bakersfield. In 1923, Jules Steinmetz developed an oil well near present-day Hesperia and began producing gasoline for local use. By 1928 there were over 100 gas stations throughout Southern California using Steinmetz fuel. A water tower built in 1930 supplies drinking water to more than 25 thousand people across southern California including Hesperia without pumps or high levels of tanker traffic necessary today Hesperia is located within Inyo County which covers most of eastern San Bernardino County and northwestern Riverside County along with some smaller areas around Yucca Valley and Off Road Canyon outside these counties.
