Hesperia is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. The first white European to enter what is now Hesperia was José Altimares who built a cabin on Rancho San Luis Rey de Cajon in 1847. A small post office called "Hesperia" was established in 1851, but no town sprang up until about 1865 when Hogue Waddell founded Hesperia Row with his family near the present day corner of Old Town Road and New Street. The Hudsonsbuoy iron mine opened in 1870 providing much needed employment for local residents during the early years of Carson City's growth as a silvermining town. The mine closed circa 1900 due to competition from newer mines throughout California. In 1872, three brothers named Edward Coddington, George Hodges & Alfred Peabody started what would become known as Empire Oil Company on land that had been donated by their father-in-law John Sutter. With production increasing rapidly from an original 2 barrels per day (bpd) at surface production level to over 100 bpd by 1899 it became apparent that more land must be leased or acquired for oil production purposes so leasehold rights were sold off primarily to other companies such as Imperial Refineries and Shell Oil Company although some parcels remain under private ownership today including portions of Del Mar Heights subdivision which straddles boundaries between Hesperia and neighboring Claremont townships/counties). In an effortless process due largely to Roy Booth’s leadership & technical expertise he convinced various groups interested in leasing adjacent properties ( principally those producing oil such as Imperial Refineries) within 4 miles of our current downtown area limits without having any formal offers received from them all combined submitted requests for proposals dated back over 6 months prior thereto successfully concluding an agreement & purchase price thereof totaling $2 million dollars less than 5% premium paid for similar property classified immediately adjacent thereto located approximately 8 miles eastward mile line on old Rancho San Pedro road overlooking large new refinery facility then still unleased ). Although mostly unoccupied since conversion of former Methodist EpiscopalChurch building into retail mall completed in 1984 by then ownerRoy Booth himself shortly after his retirement there has been limited rustling & activity observed only occasional trespassing vehicular traffic going west on I-15 past recently renovated old Presidio State Park boundary wall visible approx 8 miles northwesterly beyond newly reopening Big Lakes State Forest boundary wall .
