Hesperia is a small town in San Bernardino County, California on the banks of the Riverside River. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census. Hesperia was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1874 as a small agricultural community. The first store opened in 1875 and the first post office in 1876. It became an incorporated city in 1902. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1912 and 1913, respectively. The city limits were increased to include the current area of Hesperia on December 25, 1916 by virtue of Proposition 24 (the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution). The Hesperia Manufacturing Company was established here in 1915 by Jerald Fenton and his brother-in-law George Ives. They manufactured radios and other electronic equipment for military use during World War II. The company went out of business after the war but remains significant local history today thanks to its archives which are open to researchers at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) since 1978. Today Hesperia is known for its wine culture with some 8 wineries located within its borders; most notable being Robert Mondavi Winery which produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines under license from Atwater vintners worldwide. Other local businesses include two grocery stores, two pizza places, two bars/pubs, one Cinemark theater (the only one within town limits), several parks including Palmdale Park which had a major league baseball team active from 1959-1976 (the Hesperia Chiefs), three hospitals including one operated by Banner Health System featuring cardiovascular care services as well as numerous smaller businesses also located within or adjacent to town limits making it an thriving community that offers plenty of things to do both inside and outside of its walls!

Hesperia is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 12 miles east of Bakersfield on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 2,993 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Mormon settlers in 1877. The town name may be derived from Spanish hesperus meaning "hazy" or "cloudy." The word Hesperia is also mentioned in Hernando de Soto's 1492 map of North America and it seems to have been given its current spelling by Mormons living there in the late 1800s during their wanderings through California.
