Hesperia is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 43,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Hesperia area was first settled by Latinos in 1879. A post office called Hesperia was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The name Hesperia comes from Spanish "hueso" meaning "nose" or " sniffer," and "pura" meaning pure or new (based on a location near an ancient trade route). In 1886, Lorenzo Forbes founded the City of Industry which became a mainstay of citrus industry northwest of downtown Los Angeles. In 1893, he founded Forbes-Lodge Colony with land adjoining his Rancho Rinconada estate to provide agricultural support for the colony's 400 residents. The company prospered and by 1907 had acquired over 4 square miles (10 km²) of land in what is now Jurupa Valley east of LAX airport. In 1912, Forbes sold his holdings to John Pemberton who had organizedome sections off East Covina Boulevard between Canoga Park Road and Lankershim Boulevard as Kern River Airport Industrial Zone; this included much of what is now Hesperia
Hesperia, California is located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, about 25 miles east of downtown LA. The population was estimated at 137,512 as of 2010. It is a small town with a high school, two churches and a couple of businesses. The median household income is $80,783. There are many subdivisions in Hesperia including Rancho Cucamonga and Studio City proper. The first people to live in Hesperia were the Tongva people who arrived from Northern Mexico around AD1000. They built their villages on hilltops overlooking the San Gabriel River valley, near present-day Altadena and Pasadena. Some believe that they may have come down from Mount Wilson (see Mt. Wilson) because they used large boulders for roofs and houses in their village sites. A party led by Mexican explorer Pico de la Hoz explored what is now Hesperia in 1769 during his attempt to find an overland route to California from Mexico City via Sonora and Chihuahua Land. He named it Paso del Norte after the north fork of the San Gabriel River where he stopped for water supplies on his way southward. In 1846 when Alvarado found gold at Sutter's Mill in Sacramento County,California some prospectors began moving into Hesperia from eastern Santa Barbara County looking for orebody prospects near Cerritos Creek National Recreation Area northeast of Orange County; however no strikes were made until 1849 when prospector John Wesley Smith discovered large nuggets just west of current day Hesperia along Cerritos Creek Road between Simi Valley Boulevard and Highway 382 (Upper San Fernando Valley). This discovery led to increased activity around Cerritos Creek which became known as "the strike zone." By 1853 over 100 men had been working at Cerritos Creek; but by then it had been abandoned due to lack of supply inquiries plus problems with water availability caused by ranching activities along the creek banks east of its confluence with the Santa Monica River near Glendale codesining power Plant operated by Southern Pacific Railway Company good points such as: excellent access for shipping resources including water quality not affected by industrial runoff which makes this area ideal for growing crops tolerant to various soil types making it an ideal location for manufacturing products such as automobiles ammunition bicycles saddles mining equipment

The store operated as a general mercantile business until 1899 when it became known as the "Herspeth Store." In 1903, fire destroyed most of the businesses in downtown Hesperia and began reconstruction that lasted for many years. The original courthouse still stands today and is used as part of local government offices. Hesperia experienced growth during World War II with military installations including Air Force Station Beale Airfield (1941-1945) and Naval Weapons Station Point Reyes (1946-1947). However, industrial restructuring also took place beginning in the early 1970s which led to many layoffs among residents including those at Beale Airfield who lost their jobs because they could not find new work elsewhere; this affected attendance at nearby schools as well ().
