On September 29, 1847, Hesperia was founded as a post office on theranch of Rancho San Marcos by James B. Hickey and his wife, Mary C. Hickey. The town started out as a small farming community with only 10 residents in total. In 1850, the first post office building was built in Hesperia and became the nucleus of what would become the town's economy. In 1951, Hesperia incorporated as a municipality which helped spur growth in the community over the following years. Today, Hesperia has a population of over 50K and is home to several businesses including banks, grocery stores, restaurants and hotels.
