In 1848, the portion of Hesperia east of the San Andreas Fault was included in the newly organized California Territory. The following year, it became part of the United States when California became a republic. In 1850, Hesperia was designated as a town inresponse to petitions from citizens and businesses. On July 4, 1851, Hesperia had its first census and numbered 2,510 people. By 1860, it had reached 3,000 residents and by 1870 it had grown to 4,500 residents. On January 10th of 1871, the town was incorporated as Hesperia Township under state law.
