Hesperia is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 21 miles north of Bakersfield and 32 miles south of Fresno. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The community was founded by pioneers in 1876, when they arrived from out of state to homestead land east of present-day Hesperia. Morgan purchased 2,000 acres (0.81 km2) west of Hesperia for $15,000 cash and built a new home there called Morgan House which still stands today as a contributing structure to the Hesperia Village Historic District boundaries. In 1916 he sold his holdings to John Drysdale for $100,000 more and retired there until his death in 1947. Hesperia's first store opened on Main Street on November 6th 1896 by Simeon Wirth with local produce being sold fresh from the orchard that year. The store closed but reopened as an auto parts store on Highway 395 just south of town limits on December 20th 1896 before closing again for good permanently that same year due to lack of business opportunity within the area at that time; however remnants can be found today inside the old city walls plaza off Old US 395). In 1911, the town of Hesperia incorporated as a city. The population of Hesperia increased from 2,000 in 1910 to over 30,000 by 1930. The city experienced financial difficulties during World War II and declined after the war; however, it regained some stability after the war and has since grown again to its current size.
