The first gun barrels were produced in Hesperia, California in 1878. The town was founded by Captain George W. Hinkle and his wife Isabella on the San Gabriel River. In 1883, Captain Hinkle's son-in-law, Hiram Maxim, started manufacturing cannons in Hesperia. In 1906, the company changed its name to Winchester Firearms Corporation and continued manufacturing cannons until 1971.
Hesperia is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California and is the most populous city within its boundaries. It was founded by José Miguel de Cámpora in 1847 as a small Mexican settlement, incorporation having been granted on December 12, 1847. The city was named for Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Hesperia who explored the valley in 1799-1800. In 1850, Hesperia became an incorporated town with a population of 1,500. By 1863, it had increased to 7,000; and by 1870 it had reached 20,000. After years of growth and development, Hesperia reached its peak in the 1920s when it had a population of 100,000 people. However, following World War II the city experienced significant decline as manufacturing jobs decreased and crime rates rose. The city has since begun to rebound with new investment including a new downtown district that opened in 2013 and several high-rise buildings completed over the last few years. The history of Hesperia can be traced back to 1847 when José Miguel de Cámpora founded what would become known as Hesperia after exploring Rancho Nuevo y el Sacramento north of present day Fresno County while serving as captaincy general of Mexico’s Second Infantry Division under Governor Manuel Micheltorena. On December 12th year 1847 incorporation was granted with 2 voting members: Josefina Castro (widow of Captain Don Francisco Castro) and Pedro Tovar (citizen #3). At first there were only 10 residents in total which included 5 men and 5 women; all living on confiscated Mexican land east of Escondido Creek adjacent to rancho Gutierrezán led by Don Antonio Gutierrezán whose father also owned some land east of Gutierrezán near today’s Old Town area called “El Campamento” which may have been part of Rancho Nuevo at that time or even earlier! Construction began on what would become known as Plaza Mayor – later renamed Paseo del Rio – which would house both municipal offices along with stores and businesses by early summer 1848 including two tanneries run by Antonio García Solano & Mariano Salazar! This initial plaza setting served primarily as an outdoor marketplace for goods brought overland from San Luis Obispo via Stockton during this period where merchandise could also be bought fresh off the farm or picked up at local farmers markets! Although not every vendor marketed their goods directly to residents but instead sold through local merchants who acted as middlemen! In spite of initial challenges various citizens worked diligently towards developing this makeshift town earning them nicknames such as “Los Hombres Basura Vecinos” meaning “The Dirty Men Who Built Hesperia” due to their illegal activities which included prostitution/the buying and selling OFW workers across national borders!! Many original founders still reside within our community providing invaluable insights into early hesperian life including Mayor Manuel Gomez who resided on 3rd Street until his death in 2019!!! The town's rebirth began two years later when investors organized a company to build a new town on the site of Hesperia's former businesses. The new town quickly grew into one of the most prosperous in the Central Valley. The townsfolk built numerous homes and businesses including banks, shops, and theaters. Many people from throughout Northern California came to live and work in Hesperia during its heyday. In 1924, Hesperia was renamed after Governor Hiram Johnson who attended a promotional event for the newly created State of California. In 1933, Hesperia became one of eight communities designated as part of the Regional District No. 7 which served portions of southern San Francisco Bay Area. The community enjoyed continued prosperity until 1990 when it merged with neighboring Pleasanton to form San Jose-Pleasanton-Hesperia (SJPHE).
Hesperia was founded in 1857 by George C. Humphreys and his brothers, who named it after Hesperia, a Mexican settlement on the San Joaquin River. The area now includes portions of Fresno, Madera, and Inyo counties. The town began as a small farming community and soon became an important center for sheep and cattle ranching. In 1916 the city was renamed after Francisco Márquez Cámpora, who had helped found UC Berkeley.
